Research launched by the LGBT Domestic Abuse Project and the Scottish Transgender Alliance finds that 80% of transgender respondents have experienced some form of abusive behaviour from a partner or ex-partner, although only 60% identified these behaviours as domestic abuse.

45% of respondents had experienced physical abuse from a partner or ex-partner.

47% of respondents had experienced sexual abuse from a partner or ex-partner.

Despite these high figures, 24% of people had told no one about the abuse they had experienced. The research also highlights the reluctance that many transgender people feel about disclosing or reporting abuse to services or the police.

“The research shows the high levels of abuse and prejudice that many transgender people are facing in their relationships and homes and the negative reactions that they experience when they do seek support from services.

This highlights the need for statutory and voluntary services to work together to raise awareness of this issue and improve responses to transgender people when they do access support” - Fergus McMillan, Chief Executive, LGBT Youth Scotland

This research is a further development in work by LGBT Youth Scotland and the Equality Network to improve the lives of all LGBT people experiencing domestic abuse and in striving to ensure that all transgender people experience an adequate and positive response in whatever service they access.

From WOMEN’S SUPPORT PROJECT:

September 2010 Month Of Action To Raise Awareness Of Child Sexual Abuse: Screen Debates: Playground:
22nd September, 5.45pm- 8.15pm, Glasgow Film Theatre. Women’s Support Project, in conjunction with Glasgow Film Theatre and The Nest Foundation, Los Angeles, presents ‘Playground’. Sign Language Interpreter. Tickets £6.90 /£5.20 available from GFT, 12 Rose St, Glasgow, 0141 332 6535 or online at http://www.gft.org.uk. Wheelchair Accessible. Playground is about the sexual exploitation of children and young people. This excellent documentary is a must to see from filmmaker Libby Spears and Executive Produced by George Clooney, Grant Heslov and Steven Soderbergh. It demonstrates that very little thrives on this planet without American capital, and the commercial child sex industry is certainly thriving. Spears intelligently traces the epidemic to its disparate, and decidedly domestic, roots-among them the way children are educated about sex, and the problem of raising awareness about a crime that inherently cannot be shown. We see first-hand interviews with victims, their pimps, and their abusers. Her cultural observations are couched in an ongoing mystery story: the search for Michelle, an American girl lost to the underbelly of childhood sexual abuse and exploitation who has yet to resurface a decade later. Following the screening there will be an audience/panel discussion and we are delighted to welcome to the panel, Chief Inspector Gordon Dawson, Linda Thompson, National Development Officer (Challenging Demand) and others to be confirmed.

Survey: UK Government’s Proposed Cap On Economic Migrants:
The Conservative/Liberal Democrat coalition government has pledged to lower the number of people coming to the UK from outside Europe, aiming to reduce net immigration to tens of thousands of people per year through a number of different ways - continuing Labour’s efforts to tighten up the asylum system, restricting students coming to the UK and tougher border controls. We are concerned that the cap will negatively affect a wide range of migrants, including those who are not specifically included under the Points Based System.

Closing date:             10 November 2010

The Equality Act 2010 received Royal Assent in April 2010. An important part of the Act is the public sector Equality Duty, which has a key role in ensuring that fairness is at the heart of public bodies’ work and that public services meet the needs of different groups. The Act also gives ministers the power to impose specific duties, which are legal requirements designed to help public bodies meet their obligations under the public sector Equality Duty.

This consultation seeks your views on our proposals for draft regulations for the specific duties and the list of public bodies that will be subject to the general and specific duties.

This consultation will be of interest to:

* public bodies;
* those monitoring the performance of public bodies;
* others who perform public functions; and
* organisations that are interested in how public services can eliminate discrimination, advance equality and foster good relations.

Comments from other interested parties are also welcome.

The 2nd October 2010 is the 10th Anniversary of the Human Rights Act. The 4th November 2010 is the 60th Anniversary of the signing in Rome of the European Convention on Human Rights. These anniversaries could hardly be more important for human rights activists, lawyers and those advising and operating within this fundamentally important code.
