Passionate And Perplexed: Deaf And Disability Art In Scotland:
Monday, 23rd November, gathering at 12.30 - event from 1pm until 5pm, Traverse Theatre, Cambridge Street, Edinburgh. Facilitated by Garry Robson (actor, writer and director) Garry: “I am passionate about work made by deaf and disabled artists and performers and yet I am perplexed at the way work is perceived by the Arts Industry and public” Passionate and Perplexed is an opportunity for the deaf and disability arts community to gather in Open Space and work on what could be improved; the things we are passionate about and the things we wish were different. “Working in Open Space allows you to set the agenda. It is an exciting open-ended event that enables a self-organising group to use its collective imagination to deal with complex issues and it will achieve this in an incredibly short space of time. On past experience of such events the more diverse our group, the more creative and exciting the work has been. All sectors and genres of the disability arts community are invited - however, we’re particularly keen to directly involve as many disabled practitioners as possible, so please pass this invite on.” If you would like to attend please contact Adrienne Zitt, Equalities admin, at adrienne.zitt@scottisharts.org.uk by 18th November. Domestic Abuse: A Workplace Issue (What HR Workers Need To Know):
Wednesday 18th November, 10am - 4pm, SWA Offices, 2nd Floor, 132 Rose Street, Edinburgh EH2 3JD. This session is aimed at HR workers and policy makers who are considering introducing a domestic abuse policy in their workplace. No previous experience or training in this area is necessary. Trainer: Nel Whiting SWA. £95 per statutory sector delegate/£75 per voluntary sector delegate.
Seminar: Children’s Understanding Of Gender And Violence:
Monday 16th November, 10am - 1pm, SWA Offices, 2nd Floor, 132 Rose Street, Edinburgh EH2 3JD. This seminar will focus on research addressing how young people construct their own gender identities and define the identities of others. These constructions are pertinent for understanding how gender relates to and informs their subsequent discussions of male violence against women. It will also consider the difficulties in accessing young people because of (adult) gatekeeper notions of childhood innocence and their assumptions that ten and eleven year olds lack knowledge and understanding to effectively engage with the research. The final part of the seminar focuses upon young people’s understandings of the gendered nature of violence and their own conceptualisations of power. The disparity between their own defining of violence and the naming of specific incidents is identified as an integral feature of their understanding. The seminar will seek to facilitate discussion and debate regarding the translation of this theoretical research into practical responses. Nancy Lombard. £35 per statutory sector delegate/ £25 per voluntary sector delegate
Development Day: Dating Violence: Young People & Domestic Abuse:
Friday 27th November, 11am - 4pm, SWA Offices, 2nd Floor, 132 Rose Street, Edinburgh EH2 3JD. Scotland has long recognised the potential impacts of all forms of domestic abuse on children and young people. Building on this understanding the National Domestic Abuse Delivery Plan for Children & Young People (2008) recognises that young people can experience domestic abuse in their own relationships. This session is aimed at policy makers who wish to explore effective ways of mainstreaming work around young people’s experiences of abuse in intimate relationships into policy and practice. Trainers: Ellie Hutchinson & Nel Whiting (SWA). £50 per statutory sector delegate/£30 per voluntary sector delegate inclusive of buffet lunch

From GLASGOW SOCIAL CARE PROVIDERS FORUM:
Research Question About Social Workers:
From Professor David Leece, Manchester Metropolitan University and Dr. Janet Leece, Honorary Research Fellow, Staffordshire University: “The role of social workers is likely to change, as many disabled and older people are now receiving cash via individual budgets or direct payments to pay for their support needs, instead of having services provided by Social Services. In future social workers may become Support Brokers to help people spend the cash by choosing the services that best meet their assessed needs. For example, a Support Broker could give information about the range and type of services that are available for people to purchase. Do you think this is what social workers should do? We are conducting research into people’s views about the future role of social workers. All responses will be treated as confidential” Please send all responses via email to Janet Leece: DLeece@aol.com

Volunteers Not Protected By Disability Discrimination Law:
An Employment Appeal Tribunal has ruled that volunteers are not protected by the Disability Discrimination Act, as they are not covered by the term “occupation”. While the legal concept of employment is well established, this case brought by a volunteer adviser for Mid Sussex Citizens Advice Bureau was the first test of the scope of “occupation”. The solicitor representing the CAB, from Bates Wells Braithwaite, said the outcome was in line with previous decisions that maintained that laws designed to protect employees did not apply equally to volunteers. ODI Examines Choice And Control In Independent Advocacy:
ODI has published an evidence review which examines four situations where disabled people are at risk of losing choice and control over their lives. The situations include, for example, entering residential care or the transition to adulthood. The review found that, whilst the outcomes achieved by the disabled person didn’t always match their wishes, the advocate provided positive support. Read the report, and a framework for future research on costs and benefits of independent advocacy, on the research reports section of the website www.odi.gov.uk/research/research-reports.php#iar The completion of this research fulfils a commitment made by the government in 2008’s Independent Living Strategy: www.odi.gov.uk/working/independent-living/strategy.php
