From GLASGOW ANTI RACIST ALLIANCE:

Community Discussions: Racism And The Rise Of The BNP:

10th March, 12 - 2pm, Edinburgh and Lothian Racial Equality Council (ELREC) offices

17th March, 12noon - 2pm, 78 Carlton Place, Glasgow, G5 9TH

Evidence indicates that racism is on the increase in our communities. As Strathclyde Police statistics indicate, there were 1206 racist incidents recorded - an increase of 8.7% over the same period last year (Strathclyde Police Diversity Report 2009/2010: April-September) In relation to this, in the November 2009 Glasgow by-election, the British National Party (BNP) claimed almost 5% of the votes-only 62 votes less than the Conservative party and 549 more than the Liberal Democrats. With the recent rise in popularity of the BNP, they are currently claiming that several candidates will be standing across Scotland at the general election this year. As the Glasgow Anti Racist Alliance, we are running a number of Community Discussion meetings across the country in the next few months on current issues. The first of these discussions is on the rise of the BNP. For more information contact Lyndsay on 0141 418 6530. Lunch will be provided. For catering purposes please confirm your attendance and any dietary requirements by e-mailing Lyndsay@gara.org.uk or phone 0141 418 6530. This event is open to community groups and members from all backgrounds. Please come and join us for a lively discussion on an issue that affects us all.

From ODS CONSULTING:

Equality And Diversity Strategy - Survey:

Glasgow Community Planning Partnership is currently developing its Equality and Diversity Strategy.  This is a plan to work to meet the needs of all communities in Glasgow.  It will be an important way of making sure that people are not disadvantaged because of their personal characteristics.  We, ODS Consulting, are helping with the Equality and Diversity Strategy by finding out about the needs, experiences and strengths of different communities in Glasgow.  We have gathered together what we can about people’s needs and experiences, and now we would like your views.  We have developed two very short surveys, exploring your views on the needs and experiences of people from minority faith groups, and from minority ethnic groups:

Minority Faith Groups Survey www.surveymonkey.com/s/MinorityFaithGroupsSurvey

Minority Ethnic Groups Survey www.surveymonkey.com/s/MinorityEthnicGroupsSurvey

Each survey will really only take about five minutes to complete.  We realise that everyone’s individual needs are different, but these surveys are very much about gathering views on any key trends or priority issues.  They will help us to supplement the information that we already have. Completing the survey will definitely help Glasgow Community Planning Partnership to plan its activities around equality.  Please complete this survey by 19th March 2010 at the latest.  Please feel free to forward this survey to others.  Just get in touch with me if you have any questions or would like to discuss.

Opening Pandora’s Box: Rediscovering Forgotten Firebrands: Erika Mann And Marta Astfalck-Vietz - Two New Women Artists Of Twenties Berlin:

Tuesday 9 March, 5pm - 7pm, Glasgow Women’s Library, 81 Parnie St. Katherine Tubb and Jochen Hung will lead an exclusive unearthing of some lost German art pioneers. Followed by a workshop exploring more aspects of lesbian history and culture with Amy Tooth Murphy and the GWL Archivist, Hannah Little. Open to men and women. The journalist Erika Mann and the photographer Marta Astfalck-Vietz worked in Berlin during the 1920s and lived fully emancipated lives - sexually, financially, and creatively. In Germany, however, Marta’s photographs, as well as many of Erika’s articles, have been largely forgotten until recent years and have never been presented to a Scottish audience before. They offer insights into a period of radical change in German history: social and political, cultural and economic. To celebrate International Women’s Day these talks will explain how Erika and Marta were forgotten and then re-discovered, and will explore the links between the advent of the modern era and the lives of these unusual, compelling, and inspirational women.  For more information or to book your place email info@womenslibrary.org.uk or call us on 0141 552 8345. This event is kindly supported by the University of Glasgow.

From PEACOCK VISUAL ARTS:

Something Very Important Is Happening In Aberdeen And We Need Your Help (Deadline For Signing Petition Is Fri 5th March):

By November 2008 Peacock had full planning permission and had raised £9.5million (75% of the total costs) to build a beautiful new cultural facility in Aberdeen’s Union Terrace Gardens.  Then in November 2008 oil magnate Sir Ian Wood announced the revival of a 20 year old scheme to concrete over these Gardens (Aberdeen’s only city centre park) to create a new Square and underground real estate. The local authority halted work on Peacock’s project while Sir Ian’s favoured scheme was investigated. A massive public consultation is currently coming to an end. (This friday 5th March) However this is ONLY about Sir Ian’s favoured scheme for a City Square and is NOT consulting the people of Aberdeen on their views on Peacock’s project or any other possible win-win scenario. Sir Ian’s favoured scheme involves the complete destruction of the Gardens. It will cost £140million+ of which £70 million+ must come from the public  purse. It will involve the felling of 80 mature trees. Peacock’s building by award-winning architects Brisac Gonzalez would regenerate the Gardens and welcome over 200,000 visitors per year at a fraction of the cost to the public purse and the environment. It will provide a new home not just for Peacock but for CityMoves and the city council’s own Arts Development team and, most importantly, a much-needed creative hub for the people of Aberdeen and the North East.  What You Can Do To Help? 1. Take part in the consultation www.thecitysquareproject.com/consultation/ For info: If you support the retention of the Gardens and realisation of the Brizac Gonzales designed Arts Centre vote NO on question 3. 2. Sign the “Save Union Terrace Gardens” petition and pass it round your organisation. http://www.savepeacock.org Thanks so much in anticipation of your help.  If you would like any more information do visit our web site http://www.peacockvisualarts.com
