From VARIANT:
Competitive Edges Symposium: Culture, Nationalism & Migration:
Saturday 28th March, CCA, 350 Sauchiehall St, Glasgow G2 3JD tel 0141 352 4900. Speakers tbc. At the 2008 Lothian Lecture given in Edinburgh Professor Tom Nairn and Scotland’s nationalist First Minister, Alex Salmond envisioned Scotland as a nimble nation “light on its feet” and “possibly out-smarting heavyweights”. In many ways this idea draws upon Ireland’s boom time image of the Celtic tiger. Given that nation states are not in fact mobile entities within the international juridical system of sovereignty, we aim to involve internationally acknowledged researchers, academics, writers and artists, who are engaged with the issues of globalisation, to explore what such ideas mean for culture and the arts, particularly in relation to identity and migration, and ultimately for the policies that shape culture. This will be a vital opportunity for a wide range of people to historically locate contemporary cultural trends and to situate the politics and discourse of diversity in a comparative international context. We think it is particularly important to examine cultural policies in the context of uneven development and the phenomenal rise of the speculative international economy. ‘Snapshot’ Talks Programme: A Series Of Cultural Conversations And Dialogue
At the Gallery of Modern Art, Queen St, Glasgow. Admission is free, but numbers are limited so please book at arts.development@csglasgow.org Culture is everywhere. At the same time it is increasingly difficult to define and understand, to differentiate it from other areas of life, and to know its value. Culture shapes our lives - from the ubiquitousness of popular culture to talk of ‘cultural creatives’, ‘cultural industries’ and ‘cultural identities’. Glasgow sees itself as a cultural city and was famously European City of Culture. This series, taking place in the context of ‘Snapshot’ exhibition and hosted by Culture and Sport Glasgow in association with Demos Associate Gerry Hassan, aims to look at various areas, issues and challenges to different aspects of culture. It will offer original, thoughtful discussions with leading thinkers and practitioners from various specialisms and perspectives which hopefully act as a beginning, not an end point.

Tell Us What You Think About Consumer Issues In Scotland – Join Our Network:
An appeal has been issued for volunteers to join a Scotland-wide panel to ensure that the voice of consumers in Scotland is heard. Consumer Focus Scotland’s Consumer Network gathers the views of volunteers from across the country on a diverse range of issues – from education to the environment, health to housing, local government to food and diet, and now they also include energy and post. The information is collected regularly and it is used to inform policy and research for Scotland’s foremost consumer organisation. Consumer Network Co-ordinator, Gill MacGregor, would like to encourage more people to get involved in the Network, so that the needs and experiences of local communities can be properly heard: ‘Volunteers who feed information in through the Consumer Network are providing a hugely valuable service by ensuring we get as complete a picture as possible of the problems and issues that people in Scotland’s diverse communities are facing every day. This is a home-based opportunity - there are no qualifications or preconditions for being a member and although the time commitment is relatively small, the benefits for Consumer Focus Scotland of knowing that we are in touch with the real experiences of Scottish people, are huge.’ Anyone interested in joining the Consumer Network are asked to contact: Gill MacGregor, Consumer Network Co-ordinator, Consumer Focus Scotland T 0141 227 6462 E gill.macgregor@consumerfocus-scotland.org.uk W www.consumerfocus-scotland.org.uk

Regretfully it doesn’t take a diplomat or anyone in a specific position to know very clearly that a very ’sad’ part of human nature is that when economic recession comes along, the recent immigrants are named as the scapegoats. Regretfully it appears to be part of ‘human nature’ - though obviously abhorent. Since Poland joined the EU in 2004, I noticed that there was a minor undertone of anti-Polishness, but (I believe that it’s fair to say) only perhaps (and generally) amongst what can realistically be termed those who have not had the benefit of a strong social education. However, since last year I have also surprisingly heard those who are apparently socially and academically educated some of the most ignorant, ill-founded anti-Polish rants. One may state that these are only words - but as we all know, words create common opinion and on the street suffering. One only needs to look at the Romanians in Belfast’s plight last week to see this in disgusting action.
Perhaps one can’t change human nature itself - but every person can choose to think for themselves - irrelevant of who they are, or their background. Perhaps that’s all it takes to increase tolerance - which is surely common-sense.
