Requested minimum donation of £3 per person. We are lucky enough to have the group Three Voices, made up of Susan Hansen, Felicity Thomson and Arlene Wood performing the play. The event is B.Y.O.B. and any funds raised will go towards Glasgow Women’s Library’s move to The Mitchell. From EQUALITY NETWORK:

Training: Including Disabled And Minority Ethnic LGBT People:

Saturday 17th October, 10.30am - 16.30am, Glasgow Opportunities, North Hanover Street, Glasgow. FREE one day training event aimed at helping LGBT groups and organisations to become more inclusive and accessible. There are only have a few spaces remaining. Research conducted and commissioned by the Equality Network shows the real difficulties both disabled LGBT people and minority ethnic LGBT people face when trying to get involved in community groups and organisations. Involving LGBT people in groups and organisations needn’t take huge amounts of change but small changes can make a world of difference. The 2009 sector survey carried out by the Equality Network highlighted the key challenges and needs of the LGBT sector in Scotland. When asked the areas of information or training that organisations would find useful, over 60% identified that getting people involved was a priority area. This day is aimed at any LGBT organisation or group in Scotland, or groups who provide services, information or support to LGBT people. The day will be split into two sessions, one looking specifically at disabled inclusion the other at minority ethnic inclusion. If you are interested in knowing more about the training or would like a registration form contact scott@equality-network.org.

From SCOTTISH DRUGS FORUM:

Responding To The Needs Of “The Trainspotting Generation” - An Ageing Problem:

A one-day conference Wednesday 18 November, Teacher Building, St Enoch Square, Glasgow. £100 for SDF members, £130 for non-members. The latest drug deaths figures in Scotland have highlighted the scale of deaths among the so-called ‘Trainspotting generation’. The new figures contribute to growing concern about the impact of long-term problematic drug use on older people and the need to consider the wider issues involved in delivering services to this population. The conference will provide an update on the Europe-wide research project Senior Drug Dependents and Care Structures and unveil the findings-to-date of the Scottish arm of this research. Conducted by SDF, the research to be presented is drawn from interviews with older drug users and service providers. These findings, along with the experiences of a cohort of drug users in Muirhouse, Edinburgh who have been tracked through 20 years of drug use, will be placed within UK and European contexts to better frame the nature of these issues. It also offers the opportunity to reflect on the part which services can play in offering genuine and sustainable routes to recovery within the context of the Scottish drugs strategy. This event will be of interest to policy makers, planners, manager and practitioners involved in the fields of drugs and drugs treatment, health, social support and later life issues.

From SCOTTISH COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT CENTRE:

Achieving Community Empowerment (ACE):

SCDC has been awarded over £400,000 from the BIG Lottery Fund to deliver the ACE capacity building programme in Scotland.  The programme aims to build the capacity of emerging community groups by providing mentoring support, developing learning materials, facilitating the sharing of knowledge, experience and learning between participating projects and communicating key lessons more widely.  The programme will run for four and a half years and will directly benefit 50 groups across Scotland. We will work with 10-12 groups per year to support them to assess the motivations and capacities of their own organisation, and those they seek to influence or work with. We will encourage groups to build awareness and support in their community, and to build the evidence to support the case for change.  Such change may involve establishing community-run services or facilities; working with public agencies through community planning processes, or advocating through other means. This will be done through a series of structured workshops that focuses on the four key considerations in effective community action: assessment, planning, doing and reviewing.  We will also develop a toolkit which draws on a range of good practice materials and ensure shared learning takes place with and between participants so that lessons learned can be shared across the statutory, voluntary and community sectors. We are currently devising the systems and processes to identify eligible groups for the programme and expect to launch further details of the application process in the New Year.  In the meantime, if you would like to express your interest and be added to our database to receive further detailed information, please contact Aileen Skillen 0141 248 1924 email aileen@scdc.org.uk

Two Other Capacity Building Programmes:
The BIG Lottery Fund is funding two other capacity building programmes with other partner organisations under the Dynamic Inclusive Communities Fund.  We will work closely with them to maximise the impact and learning of all three projects.

Our Community Our Future, delivered by the Scottish Community Foundation, is designed to provide support to a small number of new and emerging groups to develop their capacity to influence change within their community.  For more information visit www.scottishcf.org.uk or register your interest with us and we will send you further details when available.

Forward Scotland will provide support to 150 new and existing groups under the ‘Sus It Out +’ programme to help them develop and become more sustainable.  For more information visit www.forward-scotland.org.uk
